Mapquest does a great job of getting you here.
If you are coming from Charlotte, please do NOT use Mapquest. It will take you off the freeways and into some pretty bad areas. Take I-77 toward Columbia, then I-20 toward Augusta, then take I-26 toward Spartanburg. Then get off at Exit 101A, US 176/Ballentine-White Rock, and follow the directions below.
Whether you are coming from either direction (Spartanburg/Greenville or Charleston on I-26), get off on Exit 101A, US 176/Ballentine-White Rock, and follow the directions below.
I am three miles from I-26 freeway.
When looking for my driveway, here are a few pointers.
We have seven acres behind the Helping Hands Landscape Nursery.
The Nursery uses our driveway as their EXIT.
Our mailbox has the numbers in blue down the bottom post.
Immediately next to the mailbox is a drive marked EXIT. This is our driveway.
Pull into the "exit" drive and follow it along the Nursery's property. You will come up to a fence and will be required to go left.
You will see my log home on the left as you come up to the fence.
I have a circular drive in front of my home. Please pull into the circular drive and come into the house where I and the puppies will be waiting for you! If the weather is nice, I will have the puppies on my front porch.
I will have all vet documentation, vaccination/worming records, microchip info (for those w/this option) and other things I have picked up along the way for you to take w/your new puppy.
It is best to travel w/small puppies in their carriers. It is safer for you and for them. After a few minutes the puppy will tire of being held and want to get down and move about. It is easier to put them in their carrier and teach them about car rides from the very beginning. Put a small towel and a toy or chew in the crate with them.
If you are traveling some distance and want to take your puppy out to pottey on the way home, be sure to bring a collar, leash and sandwich bags. Sandwich bags? When your puppy poops you can place your hand inside the bag, pick up the mess and then roll the bag off your hand and over the mess. Throw it away.
A tip for traveling pet owners: Gas stations and Welcome Centers on or near the interstate are the worst places for you to stop and exercise and potty your younger puppy. Everybody's traveling companion goes potty there and it is a perfect breeding ground for communicable dog diseases and parasites . Use a small gas station off the beaten path instead, or drive a bit off the interstate, to let your puppy go tinkle - way safer and less likely to pick up parasites and diseases as well. If you use a rest area or large gas station, keep your puppy on the concrete. Be especially careful in rest areas and pet stores. Deadly diseases, like parvovirus, are shed in the stool of unvaccinated dogs. You do not want to have your puppy sniff their feces and infect themselves.
Do not feed or water your puppies on the way home. I will feed them just a very small portion before leaving to avoid accidents and upset tummies. This will also start the training process immediately. When your puppy gets home, take him right to the pottey spot and tell them to go pottey (or whatever phrase you have decided on), give them a few minutes to explore and have time to pottey. Tell them what they are to do..."go pottey" (or whatever term you want to use). While they are doing the deed, say good girl!!!! go pottey! so they begin to associate the deed with the words. When your puppy potteys in that spot, praise them lavishly and inside you go! Don't feed your puppy until the evening meal. They will be hungry and ready to focus on eating. Give your puppy 15 minutes of uninterrupted time in their crate to eat and have a drink of water. Walk away from the cage so your puppy knows what he is in there at that time for....eating. After 15 minutes, take your puppy back outside to the pottey spot. Be sure to pick up the food & water dishes.
