What makes a better pet, male or female???

Well the straight forward truthful answer is both make excellent family pets. Both are wonderfully smart, loving and family oriented.

The age old dilemma of which is better, boy or girls for pets.

Many people believe that female dogs make better pets. Female preference seems to be ingrained in most people. It is what most of us grew up with and it is an old wives tale that girls are better pets. It simply is not true.

Most calls for pet dogs have people wanting a 'sweet girl'. They don't think females display alpha behaviors like 'marking' and/or 'humping'. They believe that they are more docile and attentive and do not participate in fighting over dominance of another dog, a family member.

The truth is that girls do "hump" to show dominance and they are very energetic. When they get into a fight with another dog, they do not stop. It is fight til the end. They are also sweet, loving and eager to please their human family.

Boys "hump" out of dominance, too, however if the boy is neutered young, the testosterone levels recede or never become active. Most of the behaviours associated with a male adult dog are gone. 99% of the time they do not lift their leg to urinate...they squat like a girl.

If a boy learns to lift his leg, he will continue to do so throughout his lifetime. Once learned, it is ingrained so the earlier he is neutered the better. It is not true that if an older dog is neutered he will lose the desire to mark territory or lift his leg to urinate. This is a discussion to have with your veterinarian if you are adopting an older boy.

Having your girl or your boy spayed/neutered young will prevent surprise puppies, no marking of territory, pee-ing on the bushes and will give added health benefits to your dog.
